A goliath doesn’t stand in the way of something God doesn’t have good plans for…

This renewed thought stems from the story of David and Goliath in the book of 1 Samuel

“God, I don’t know your plan for me.  I fear it does not include a family of my own.  But I know fear does not come from you.  This is my goliath that I put trust in you to defeat.”

I heard from my pastor during his sermon on the story of David and Goliath that a goliath stands between the truth/promise of the word of God (Bible) and the reality of your life.  It is a focus that becomes so big in your life that it blocks you from seeing the true promises of God.  It gets you to focus on your own insecurities, pulling your attention further away from the truth…what is the truth? The Bible is the truth and a guide to see God’s beautiful plan for your life.

My goliath as a single woman is the fear of motherhood not being a part of my future.  And this goliath is accompanied by the equally large shadow of doubt that I will ever meet my person to start that journey to motherhood with.  It stands before me on my path as I walk through my 30s and it’s not one that I can easily overlook.  It’s around every corner… as I stand in line at the grocery store waving to the baby on the hip of the mother in front of me.  It’s there when I go for a walk and pass the cute older couple holding hands on the bench.  It’s even present as I watch my favorite rom com.  My goliath, just like David’s, seems daunting when I place all my focus on it.  And this is where the renewed thought comes in.

When you focus on anything, it enlarges it to make it seem like there is nothing around it that could be larger.  But David did something different; he didn’t stand paralyzed in fear, instead he stood firm and faced the giant refocusing on God’s perfect and unfailing love.   David’s eyes were cleared of fear because his focus was fixed entirely on God’s promises.  What does God promise? That he has good plans to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11)

When I stop focusing on my goliath, I notice how small it is compared to God’s perfect unfailing love.  I do not know the rest of my story here on Earth, but I know His plans are good.  But let me be clear, shifting my focus is not giving up on my want for a husband and kids, rather it is refocusing my attention away from a fear of the unknown and on to the One whose plans are always good.  With this I begin to renew my thoughts and pray…

“So again Lord, just like David, I choose to see past this Goliath and trust in your good plan.  I may be troubled but with you, my fears fall away as I wrap myself in your promises.  Your goodness is present in every aspect of my life.  I pray my husband feels that too, because why else would a Goliath be present if it wasn’t trying to block me from a wonderful chapter of my life involving a God fearing man to build a God loving family with?”

So sweet friend, what is your goliath right now?

And remember, The enemy never attacks something God doesn’t have good plans for….

Jeremiah 29:11- For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
